Habits are an essential part of who we are and what are lives are like. I’ve been writing about the New Year lately, of coure, since it carries so much meaning for those of us who think about personal transformation. In those writings (here, here and here), I’ve explored the notions of recovery as personal revolution; the importance of setting attainable goals, and being proactive in making the life you want to live. It occurs to me now that another key aspect in personal transformation is the development of new habits. We typically talk about breaking old habits around this time of year as we make our New Year’s resolutions, but I encourage you to think of establishing new ones instead. It’s much easier to build something positive by simply building. That way we don’t focus on the negative, but go directly to the positive in our attention and intention. As we build the positive new habits into our lives that we like, we can achieve the transformations that we want.

I have assembled some quotes about habits below to illustrate the focus I am recommending. It helps to learn more about habits so you can more easily navigate their world. We all are the proverbial ‘creatures of habit’. Which habits and what kind of habits–those are the important issues. Which do you want to live with? You can choose them. Eventually, you will find that just like brushing your teeth, they are something you just do without much thought.
